Colic, Constipation Issue in Babies - Remedies (Home Tried)

Colic and Constipation are two most common issues in babies. A very thought of it gives parents a nightmare. I and my wife were no way different to be spared from it.

The cycle of trouble began for us and our babies soon after the birth. As we stay in a nuclear family, we had no clue whatsoever how to tackle these problems. The only possible option was to follow our pediatrician's advice religiously. But we soon lost faith in his advise as it wasn't helping the twins. We were unable to stand their abdominal pain and their frequent crying.

Big disadvantage of staying nuclear is you do not get wise suggestions from experienced people / seniors.to handle such issues. So, we decided to do our own study and find what works best for the twins. The days of struggle had just begun for us and the twins.

We tried various options (home remedies and otherwise) to get rid of Colic, Constipation issues. Here are the few options we tried with their effects, outcomes:

Colimax Drops:

Pediatrician cautioned us the day our twins born that the babies might suffer from colic if they'll be mostly (exclusively) formula fed. He advised us to burp the babies after every feed and incase of colic pain, give colimax drops. Giving burp to few days old baby was out of option in our case. We were hell scared to do that. So we decided to give few drops of colimax as and when baby felt colicky. Few days passed by and there were no signs of improvement. When we checked with doc again, he asked us not to worry much because colic issues are there in less than 3 months old babies and asked to keep giving colimax drops when required. But we were not able to stand their pain. He suggested us to change the feeding bottles and use anti-colic bottles.

Philips Avent to Dr. Brown's Bottles:

We started with Philips Avent feeding bottles. We had no clue that a bottle might cause colic till our pediatrician told us. We realised Philips Avent bottles are not anti colic so we immediately moved to Dr. brown's bottles. I must admit it was a wise decision taken. Dr. Brown's bottles reduced colic but not removed it completely.

Formula feeds:

We tried various brands formula feeds but only Similac suited our babies. Rest of the brands ff aggravated colic and constipation issues. Please note, each baby is different in accepting different brands of ff.

Colimax Df Drops:

Bottles were effective to reduce colic but the twins were still in pain. Another Pediatrician recommended to use "Colimax Df" instead of Colimax as Df contains fennel oil which is herbal. He showed us how to burp the baby but we were still not comfortable burping the twins. So with no burping and new Colimax Df, we barely saw any improvement.

Gripe Water:

Our maid recommended us to give Gripe Water. It's Ayurvedic with no side effects. It can be mixed in feed and given.

Our Pediatrician was Okay in giving gripe water. Gripe water helped to solve constipation issues but not the colic. But this was a temporary solution to resolve constipation problems. The moment we stopped giving it, constipation was back. So we did not want to create dependency of it so we completely stopped it.

Dabur Janamguti:

We now were giving Dabur Janamguti to alleviate colic issues. We stopped it after few days knowing that it contains honey which causes botulism in newborn babies.

Santulan Balgutti:

This is an Ayurvedic product. We have been giving this till date with no issues. Although it did not resolve the colic / constipation issues but this is good product considering the long term benefits it has in improving the immune system.

Hing powder (asafoetida):

We applied hiing powder (mixed in water) around baby's belly. This really helped in removing gases and reduced colic.

Water soaked Raisins:

We soaked raisins in water overnight and next day fed the extract of it to twins. This was a very effective solution in eradicating constipation problems.

Duphalac:

Our Pediatrician recommended us to use Duphalac Syrup. We tried it only once on 1 of the twins. Effect - Baby had a running stomach throughout the day. We were so scared that we stopped it immediately. This is only used by adults and not to be given to newborns.

Corn Syrup:

This product is good in a way that it softens the stool although it do not resolve the constipation issues. We mixed it in baby feed.

So these are the various options we tried to resolve colic and constipation issues.

P.S: Please do not consider this post as a recommendation of any one or all the options. I have written this post based on my experience. Parents must do their own study and speak to their pediatrician before applying any of the solution mentioned here.

Note: I do not support / banish / recommend any of the solutions mentioned here. Every baby has his / her own body system to accept / reject solutions. Please ask your doctor first before implementing any option on your babies. Take Care
